New artwork featured on downtown business windows, voting open for People’s Choice Award

Local artwork is now featured at downtown Aberdeen businesses. It’s made possible through a grant from the Knight Foundation.

Visitors downtown might have noticed a series of window clings at local businesses.

The artwork is a competition made possible through a partnership between the Aberdeen Area Community Foundation and the Knight Aberdeen Fund of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Artwork was installed on a dozen business windows in mid-May. This is the second year for the downtown art project. Art in 2021 featured works painted directly on to business windows.

Local artists submitted their work based on the theme of the wildlife and wildflowers of South Dakota, according to a news release. A panel of judges selected the pieces that are now featured.

“The Downtown Art Project is a great opportunity to showcase local artwork and generate visibility for artists and creatives in our area.” said project director Alexis Doerr in the release.

Cathy Smith
Jill Craft
Jim Weber
Lori Tobin
Fox Fesler
Deb Carson
Grace Campbell
Jazmin Barke
Denis Heidenreich

Two collages of work are also on display. They were submitted by the Creative Expressions program at Aspire and Aberdeen Achieve at Central High School.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners, as well as a People’s Choice Award. Voting for people’s choice is available through Wednesday at the Aberdeen Area Community Foundation website at www.aberdeencommunityfoundation.com.

“We’re thrilled to be able to continue the Downtown Art Project this year,” Aberdeen Area Community Foundation President Heath Johnson said in the release. “We’re able to display more art this year, and we believe using clings makes it easier for more artists to be involved.”
